Generally speaking, I avoid watching TV and try to ignore the newspaper—and for some reason life is a lot better that way. If I had one big sin in terms of the media, it's the radio. When I'm not listening to CDs or enjoying the silence, I listen to the airwaves. Here's some of my of favorites...

National Public Radio
Most reliable and ethical source for news, analysis, journalism, music, and the arts. Programming that caters to our intelligence as human beings.

WMNF
Tampa's alternative station for music and news since 1979. I ended up designing one of the station's first T-shirts, "RADIO FREE TAMPA," as well as a cover for one of their printed programs. WMNF played alternative and eclectic music at a time when 'alternative' actually meant something. It was Pam Wiener and John Dubrule's new music show, which focused on the punk, new wave and avant garde rock scene, that made living in Tampa special. Pam and John's broadcasts, plus their incredible enthusiasm and personal support of the local bands and visiting acts, became a huge influence to the live music scene and the next so-called wave. What John Peel was to BBC Radio and the UK, Pam and John were to WMNF and Central Florida.

WMBR
This lively MIT college station is another fav with programs like "Breakfast of Champions," "Late Riser's Club" & "Lost and Found," plus much, much more.

Fresh Air
Formerly a top fav (the programming keeps changing), they have have a superb selection of new music mixed with humorous station IDs. Brought to you by the beautiful people at the University of Edinburgh.

A Prairie Home Companion
If radio was a magic book, then that's Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion every Saturday. Live music, comedy, story and imagination.

Radio Nigel
Pop, new wave and post-punk "standards" of the 1980s. Radio Nigel who generally offers a good mix, but can get tiresome.

WGBH Classical
Nothing like old school. All classical & no ads from one of the best public broadcast companies & producers of PBS shows.

Otto's Classical Baroque
Baroque music only, to soothe the savage beast. The occassional ads make my fur stand on end though.

Commercial radio is owned by one or two corporations now, and they're not in the music business. They're in the advertising business...So let's not kid ourselves. If you want to hear music, go buy a guitar. — Elvis Costello
